More Thoughts on Perspective
In a recent Sunday School class Matt Lewis provided a perspective that really helped me better understand something I’ve been doing for many years. He views scripture and song as means of positioning ourselves for God’s work of transformation. Scripture and song provide entrance to the ministry of the Holy Spirit. As people view my involvement in singing and playing I hope they don’t think I’m making music an object of veneration. God, alone, is worthy of the heart’s adoration.
The writer of “Fairest Lord Jesus” directs our attention to the One who is the Lord of creation. Martin Luther referred to creation as “the mask of God.” Some are prone to marvel in the beauty of the created world and miss the One who creates. For them God is hidden behind the mask.
Another great perspective was provided by my friend, Wilson. He frequently reminds people in various walks of life that what they’re doing is ministry, and he thanks them for what they do. One day I thanked a student for his ministry on his bass guitar. His response was interesting. He said, “I’m just groovin’ as I play.” Hopefully I planted a seed thought in his young mind.
Here’s another one that happened when a musician changed his role. In this case a friend who plays electric bass and blues harmonica decided to join the choir. When we sang “Speak, O Lord” by Getty and Townend he was moved by the text. He admitted that he had given no thought to the words while playing his bass part.
Perhaps my blog could help you and other readers to think about things in new ways. Blessings as you view your pathway as a road to enriched living and serving. Sometimes it’s good to realize the importance of doing something just for the joy that brings to you.
